Hi Onahan Families. My name is Barbara Hegarty and I will be starting my 35th year of teaching and my 7th year at Onahan. I am looking forward to a great year!
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois - Chicago in Elementary Education in 1991 and received my Special Education Endorsement in 2012. Additionally I earned a Master’s Degree in Learning Design and Technology from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2022 and am currently pursuing my Master’s Degree in Education - Reading Specialist from the University of St. Francis. I love learning and it has been a rewarding experience. I look forward to sharing what I have learned with my students.
I began my teaching career as a general education teacher in Catholic Schools teaching 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and Pre-K. I have also worked in Special Education at Beard School and North River School in CPS.
In my hours away from school I enjoy spending time with my husband of 34 years, Kevin and my two adult children, Bridgette who is 25 years old and lives and teaches in Rhinelander, Wisconsin and my son Michael who is 23 years old and lives and works in the business field in Winona, Minnesota. We enjoy spending time outdoors gardening, hiking, and exploring new places.
I am looking forward to working with my new students this year and I know we will have a great year!

I began my teaching career in the General Education setting in the primary grades working for several different schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago. I received my Special Education Endorsement in 2012 and have worked in the field ever since that time. Previous to Onahan, I worked at Beard School and North River School. This will be my 13th year with Chicago Public Schools.
I am really looking forward to meeting my new students! When I am not teaching, I love spending time with my husband Kevin, my daughter Bridgette, who graduated from college this past May and will begin her teaching career in Wisconsin, my son Michael, a Junior in college and our rescue dog Mickey. We love doing all things outdoors. I also really enjoy gardening, crafting and photography. I am currently working towards earning my Masters Degree in Education - Learning Design and Technology from St. Mary's University of Minnesota.
