What is the Environmental Club?
The Onahan Environmental Club was established to:
- Create awareness of environmental protection, conservation, preservation, and restoration
- Provide students with the opportunity to learn more about their surroundings, participate in environmental activities at school and in the community.
- Promote environmental awareness and develop social and life skills.
- Increase student awareness of environmental issues and give them power to make change.
- Provide opportunities for students to become directly involved in a variety of activities relating to the environment.
- Promote environmental awareness and empower students to take action and work toward building a sound environmental ethic.
Since 2018, the Environmental Club has begun composting waste from school lunches and recycling paper throughout the building. With the help of alumni, parents, and the school community the Environmental Club established raised vegetable beds, a butterfly garden, a sensory garden, and fruit patches. The group has also experimented with hydroponic gardening, participated in the Openlands - Birds In My Neighborhood program, and raised funds to support the Australian wildlife that was affected by forest fires in 2020.
Students in grades 5 through 8 are invited to become members. We meet on certain Mondays from 2:45 -3:45 in room 124.
